So right, Sue.
Speaking for myself, there's times I need the internal drive as well as the external response to keep me afloat.

I notice a gentle give-and-take between the two. When one is weak, the other seems to pick up steam. Nothing I initiate, they just seem to work together naturally. When exhibits are slow, I get inspired to explore new ground. When I have little inspiration, positive responses and sales pop up.
Funny how it seems to work that way. :)

Maggie - loved it! Fantastic - and just what I was looking for when I wrote this post. Thank you!

Great post, Sue. You've really hit a sensitive nail on the head about how we measure success in the arts. My comment started to run over three paragraphs, so I thought it would be better to answer you over at my own blog. Umm, better heat up your tea before you read it. It's kind of long...
