I too am addicted to the "flow" and it seems to be the only completely satisfying feeling I understand. When I don't get a "flow" in my art, I feel like it's soul-less, however; critical thinking helps me explore options the "flow" won't usually go. It's about choosing the challenge over the comfort. To be a good artist you need to keep learning, challenging yourself and taking risks. Thank you for this post!

Great post. You're right about listening to music; I can't really have any music on at all as I paint, as I am trying really hard to listen to what the paint is saying. And I talk to myself constantly. I don't know how often I experience the "flow," but I often experience my process as a changing of thought pattterns that's sometimes like music.

For me, working in the zone is a rare, but great experience. It's when I put down a stroke, and see the next, and next, as each change shifts the entire painting and everything is connected. It usually happens when I've been on a painting marathon. Unfortunately life doesn't often allow that. More often, I'm getting back into the studio after being away for a number of days, then need to reconnect. I find that's when I sometimes go into automatic mode, not totally engaged with the work. But I am always conflicted whether to paint through it, or keep going and possibly dumb down my painting. Often a good dose of studio puttering sets me right.

licking: repeatedly painting the same brush stroke over and over in an attempt to get it right

Good Advice, as always, Sue. The "zone" can be a trap as well as a high, but still seductive. No licking?
